In 1972 the county Amberg- Sulzbach founded the supraregional museum of mining and industry in Theuern, which is 8 km away from Amberg.
It was opened in 1978. It´s main goal is to document, explore and illustrate the mining and industry of the complete eastern Bavarian region.
The museum is located in the Hammerherrn castle which was built in 1781. According to the records of the church the groundstone of this late baroque castle was laid on the 25th August 1780. The Jägerhaus (Hunters house) which was constructed in 1682 by Johann Georg Portner was incoporated into the new building.
