Liberation Hall, Kelheim
![]() The memorial was commissioned by king Ludwig I. in order to commemorate the victorious battles fought against Napoleon in the wars of liberation 1813-1815. The construction of the Liberation Hall (Befreiungshalle) was first executed by Friedrich Gärtner, who was inspired by the style of the Classical Antiquity and christian building ideals and finished in 1863 by Leo von Klenze who altered the design. The buttresses of the outer facades are crowned by 18 colossal statues designed by Johann Halbig which serve as allegories of the German tribes. Inside 34 goddesses of victory fashioned from white Carrara marble and designed by Ludwig Schwanthaler, take each other by the hands rejoicing. The support 17 gold-plated shields, made from the bronze of melted down ammunition.
