Shortly after starting out you should take the time to visit the castle in Theuern. The Industrial Museum in the town shows visitors the former significance of the area as an iron mining region. Cycling along the former railway track along the Vils River you will come to Kallmünz. From here on you will follow the Naab River on its route to the Danube, which it joins in Regensburg.

Day 3
Regensburg

Regensburg - Kelheim, approx. 35 km

As you will only have a short distance to cycle today, you will have more than enough time to stroll around the old imperial town. The gothic Cathedral is the focal point of the town, and the numerous old buildings, castles, towers and stone bridges are very impressive. You will then continue upriver along the Danube towards the old Wittelsbach town of Kelheim with its Liberation Hall (“Befreiungshalle”) which you will see from afar.

Day 4
Hall of Liberation in Kelheim

Kelheim - Berching, approx. 55 km

Today you should take a boat trip to experience the Danube breakthrough and Weltenburg Monastery (not included). Then you will continue cycling along the Altmühl River, or to be more exact the Main-Danube-Canal which replaces the river here and was built by Franz Josef Strauss in the face of opposition and against all economic sense.  Today, nature along the banks of the canal has recovered and the troubled waters have been calmed. Today’s destination is Berching, which has a walled-in medieval townscape unlike any other town in Bavaria.

Day 5
Berching

Berching - Nürnberg, approx. 55/85 km

The tour today leads you either along the Main-Danube Canal to Nuremberg, or you can take the longer, but very worthwhile option through Neumarkt i.O. with its attractive old town and castle quarter. You will then cycle along the Ludwig-Danube-Main-Canal towards the old watch-making town. Don’t miss a visit to the Nuremberg Castle and the Germanic National Museum.

Day 6
Nuremberg with castle

Nuremberg - Hersbruck region, approx. 40 km

Trade and crafts laid the foundations for Nuremberg’s increase in prosperity in the Middle Ages, during which time it developed into an important urban centre. The city developed into a hub of artistic and scientific activity. Behaim designed the first globe of the earth in the city and Henlein the first pocket watch.  The city is also famous of course for its “Lebkuchen” (gingerbread) and “Bratwürstchen” (sausages). You will then continue on to Lauf with the Wenzelschloss Castle and along the Pegnitz River in the direction of Hersbruck.

Day 7
Hersbruck Castle

Hersbruck region - Amberg, approx. 45 km and individual journey home or extension of stay

You will swiftly reach Sulzbach-Rosenberg, which is well known due to the controversy surrounding the “Maxhütte”, the last iron works in Bavaria. At one time the town was the capital town of New Bohemia. After a short cycle you will come to where your journey started; Amberg from where you will return home. We would also be more than happy to extend your stay along the Five Rivers Cycle Path.
