The Altmuehl Cycle Tour

The Altmuehl Cycle Tour is one of the most popular routes in Germany. This sporty tour leads you from the Tauber Valley to the Altmühl Valley, which begins rather like a plateau before narrowing and forming the famous rock formations. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Eichstätt and Regensburg are well preserved cities which you will come across along the route which is otherwise full of natural beauty. This Altmuehl Cycle Tour requires a certain level of general fitness.

Day 1
Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Individual arrival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Your holiday begins in the town of Rothenburg in the Tauber Valley, which is well-known from America to Japan. The old town was rebuilt after it was completely destroyed in the 30 years war and is practically unchanged since then. The town has been immortalised by artists such as Spitzweg and Richter. The town walls with its towers and gateways are a good example of urban fortification. Rental bikes await you in your hotel.

Day 2

Rothenburg ob der Tauber - Gunzenhausen, approx. 80 km

Today you will leave the Tauber Valley for the not too distant source of the Altmuehl River. Those who wish can take the detour past the Ansbach Residence or can cycle directly to the small medieval town of Herrieden. You will then continue on to Gunzenhausen in the Franconian Lake District. Numerous excavations have proven that the beautiful town was also the site of a pre-historic settlement.

Day 3
Pappenheim

Gunzenhausen - Eichstätt, approx. 70 km

Today you will cycle through maize fields towards Graben, a small town which once grabbed attention due to the construction of a canal. After a few kilometres you will find yourself in the Franconian Jura. The Valley becomes increasingly narrower and steeper. Forested mountainsides with overhanging limestone cliffs accompany you along the route. Pappenheimer Castle and rock formations such as the “12 Apostles” are all located along the route. You will quickly reach the university town and former bishop’s residence of Eichstätt.

Today you will cycle through a charming nature park, the heart of the Altmuehl Valley. The imposing Kipfenberg Castle is a great place to take a short break. You will then continue on through Beilngries, a well-preserved medieval town in the direction of Riedenburg, which is also known as the pearl of the Altmuehl Valley. The “sounds museum” is worth a visit with original sound reproduction equipment and devices.

Day 5

Riedenburg - Regensburg, approx. 55 km and individual journey home or extension of stay

Soon you will come to the end of the Altmuehl in Kelheim. You can enjoy a boat trip to the beautiful Weltenburg Monastery which is nearby before heading towards Regensburg. The city is regarded as the most beautiful in Germany and the gothic cathedral is the focal point of the city. The numerous old houses, castles, towers, as well as the stone bridges are very impressive. Upon arrival in Regensburg, your Altmuehl Cycle Tour comes to a close and you begin your journey home. We would, however, be more than happy to extend your stay along the Altmuehl.
