The Altmuehl Cycle Path 2013
The starting point for our classic tour along the Altmuehl cycle path is Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This medieval town is one of the most important destinations for culture lovers. At the start of the tour, the young Altmuehl ambles through gentle fields and the dreamy meadows of the Franconian Lake District. Once it passes Treuchtlingen, however, the countryside changes abruptly. The river carves a deep course into the soft limestone of the Franconian Jura and is a true spectacle to behold: 12 majestic dolomite rocks stand towering in a row like 12 apostles in a curve of the river.
Culture lovers´ hearts will skip a beat when they arrive in Eichstätt: this university town is famous for its Baroque townscape. The tour continues along the twists and curves of the Altmühltal valley towards the Danube. The small towns of Beilngries and Riedenburg compete for visitors with their narrow winding alleyways and bold-looking castles. In a curve of the Danube you will see the famous Weltenburg monastery with its even more famous beer garden. This is where culture and nature, beer and baroque unite.
If the tour along the Altmuehl cycle path were an opera, the boat trip through the wild and romantic Danube Gorge to Kelheim would be the final act. But wait! - Regensburg is still waiting for us: a wander through this beautifully preserved town is like taking a journey through time, passing through many long-forgotten eras and starting with its Roman inhabitants.
